The Platform: Labor Returns

The final metro scene: the player cleans twenty pieces of trash, the autonomous train and commuter loop turn, and the station itself composes the score.

The Platform: Labor Returns

When the colorful playground collapses, the player emerges onto a metro platform. I first designed this as a simple "return to reality" moment; in its final form the scene became something far more ambivalent — labor returning to the very inside of the fantasy.

The underground platform: a cleanup cart, an autonomous train, and the commuter loop

The player as cleaner

This time the player is cast as a cleaner, collecting twenty pieces of trash scattered across the platform. Trash is deposited into a cart that follows when the player moves far enough away. The cart's generated interior trigger accepts only trash that was previously grabbed and released, and uses continuous collision detection to make deposits reliable.

The autonomous train and commuters

A train arrives, opens its sliding doors, exchanges passengers, departs, and returns. NPCs wander the platform on a NavMesh, then board and exit the train along authored waypoint chains. Passengers reappear at their original positions so the commuter cycle can repeat indefinitely.

The score the station composes

The metro's generative score is built on A minor pentatonic and locked to a single DSP grid: bench tape-loop pads, trash-can tick patterns, fluorescent hum drones, a rail ostinato, NPC murmurs, and tunnel rumble. The PA speakers play TTS announcements tied to train events. Each piece of trash you collect adds a quantized note to the score — chores becoming music again, but this time not voluntary.

The scene is the moment the daydream begins to reproduce the world it escaped. The task is more musical than the factory's, but no less compulsory.
